Divided We Stand – Portland Artists React to Post-Election America

Now that the shock of this unprecedented election has subsided, many of us are left with feelings of uncertainty and doubt. And while some of us would like nothing more than to curl into a ball and hope that the world continues to go on around us, others are gearing up for a fight.

Now we must decide what is truly worth fighting for. When those freedoms we hold most dear are threatened, how do we come together to protect those directly impacted by their loss, and to preserve those freedoms, not just for ourselves & our loved ones, but for ALL OF US?

Many of us no longer feel safe, now that the floodgates of racism & bigotry have been thrown wide. Civil rights, women’s rights, trans rights, marriage equality, immigration. Income inequality, health care, education, global warming. These are what’s at stake.

Let this be our rallying cry. Let us show them our hopes and our fears for the future of this country. Let us show them why we fight.

Event begins SHARP at 2pm, Saturday, December 10, 2016.
First Come/First Serve. NO ART will be SOLD before 2pm this day. Show runs through December 23, at Ford Gallery, the main floor of the Ford Building/SE Division.

Gallery hours Dec 11-23, 9am-6pm DAILY.

A portion of the proceeds benefits the Oregon Food Bank. FREE entry with non-perishable food items/Can Food. Proudly, this is our 9th year for this show, which has moved to this location from its high rise galleries at Pioneer Place (2009-2015).

Ford Gallery is proud to present the work of Karen Wippich!

Karen’s new acrylic works incorporate elements of mixed media collage, creating her own unique stories from bits of found text and imagery.

Join us on November 5th to see Karen’s latest creations and enjoy some light refreshments. Karen’s work will be on view at Ford Gallery from November 5th – December 3rd.

Artist Bio

Karen Wippich grew up moving across the US, spending time alone creating characters and fantasies. Most of her adult life has been spent working as a graphic designer. Her design work has been widely published in the US and internationally. A few years ago her focus changed to something she dreamed about as a child, to be a working artist.

Karen’s expressionist acrylic paintings show her graphic influence with figures inhabiting and blending into abstract environments, their bodies breaking into geometric shapes, incised by lines. Her paintings have been shown extensively in Oregon galleries as well as shows in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Washington State and Washington DC.

Artist Statement

I have often heard that an artist has to have a good story to go with their work. My paintings tell their own story. They are rich in history. Layers of images. Every viewer sees something, their own story, a relative, a friend and that is what I think attracts them to my paintings. If someone asks me what one of my paintings is about, I say, “you tell me”. When I paint I feel alive and free. For a few hours nothing else matters. My hope is that my paintings can make the viewer feel that way too, if even for a moment.

Into a city filled with 1st Thursdays, 2nd Tuesdays, 3rd Wednesdays, and Last Saturdays comes the changing colors of October and the opportunities that lay at the heart of Portland Open Studios.

The Ford Gallery is honored to present “Just Us,” a show in which Suzanne and Fred will be working and using the space as “studios” during the two-weekend POS event. Join us and this unique opportunity to rekindle the spirit and network of friends that came to life at the recent Pioneer Place Galleries.

JOIN US AS WE CELEBRATE FIVE YEARS OF CREATIVITY, COMMUNITY AND CONSERVATION

Saturday June 4 opening gala is kicks off the official show opening. At the opening work from over 30 local artists (all of whom used collected rainwater in their work) will be on display along with kids art made in our Raindrops Program.
